Scent and Aroma history

In each civilization, there was a special place for perfumes. For example, in the ancient Arabic history before Islam, people used perfumes like incense for psychological cases and magic. And this incense was a mixture of many perfumes (sandal wood, amber, lute…).

Concerning the Egyptian civilizations, women used to put a grease crown like a butt on their head. This grease was cooked with perfumed essences. When the grease dissolves along with the time, the perfume evaporates in the air making a beautiful fragrance. Also the Egyptians used perfumes for medical practices.
In other part, the Greek civilization had many doctors specialist in aromatherapy.

In the Chinese civilization, the groom and the bride were perfumed by different perfumes in the first night after wedding. The groom was perfumed by three kinds of essences and the bride by seven.

In recent past, the aromatherapy reappeared in France and for the first time aromatherapy clinics were established in Europe.
In Lebanon, and especially in Tripoli, and not a long time ago, there was and still a souk for perfumes makers named "Souk Al Atareen". And these perfumes makers who were wise men, doctors and poets used to say that perfume satisfies the soul. For that they cured people by perfumes using volatilizing and anointment methods. And these methods were done using a soap, which was used for cleaning and bathing. In Tripolitan weddings, they used to perfume the groom and the bride each one with different fragrances.

Also, there were some aromas that were anti epidemic like the wild bitter almond aroma that was used against the cholera, the perfumes makers had immunity against this pest because they used to work with this kind of almond in making soap. As we saw before, perfume has always been taking a special place in all civilizations because it makes all the effects needed for the body: relaxing and refreshing.
